My First Teneriffe Lace Medallion
This is my first Teneriffe Lace Medallion. I found an interesting book on Teneriffe lace at the antique pattern library website. I downloaded "Teneriffe Lace Design and Instructions, copyrighted in 1904 by Earl & Co. There are over 40 designs to make of teneriffe lace. This is Design No 1. It is referred to as one of the classic designs of the Teneriffe lace wheel. I decided that I would try to make it. I was not sure that I would enjoy the craft. So, I made my own wheel from foam core and polar graph paper. It was interesting taking the written instructions and adapting them to something I understood. I was happily surprised that it held its shape when off the wheel. Since it is harder to see very fine thread, I used size 10 crochet thread. This also gave me a great choice in colors. I like the stain glass effect of open spaces. I thought that this would make a great ornament or addition to clothing.
Pink Heart
This is the my first piece of Romanian Lace. I chose a heart because it was right before valentine day. I was happy that the heart maintained it's shape when I removed it from the loom. I enjoyed the fact that I could and do a line drawing of the image I wanted to weave. This is very different from bobbin weaving. With bobbin weaving one predetermines where all the pins wil go. With this I laid my braid around the drawing and pinned into place. I had much more freedom of design as I went along.
Tulip in Bloom
Spring is here with the Tulips Blooming
The tulips are beginning to bloom. That must mean that spring is here. Looking closely at tulips can can show the slight variation of color. It also ahows the beauty of the flower. This is an oil on unprimed canvas. A stain painting. It gives the appearance of a watercolor painting. The oil tends to bleed just like on soft watercolor paper. One color will flow into another color as the many layer are placed down.
Spring Is In The Air
Spring was quite delightful in SF this year. Summer came and it is now the coldest place in the nation. But the second spring is in the air. The California Poppies have been in bloom all summer long. They do not seem to mind the cool weather and fog off the ocean. When the sun comes out or the sky brightens the flower opens up. When the day is very dark or night unfortunately the flower closes.
This is a pastel on black sand paper. The grid of the sand paper is 300. I enjoy working on sand paper because of bright colors. My fingers are not as happy working on sandpaper.
